Sustainability is a word we’re hearing often, and through necessity has evolved into a design filter that’s applied at the start of every project. Everyday items that were once convenient, go-to solutions, are being revisited and reimagined through a more energy efficient, sustainable lens.

Like the humble take-away coffee cup for example. It’s come under intense scrutiny over the years and undergone an extreme BYO-cup makeover. Meanwhile though, its partner in crime the disposable drink tray has largely gone unnoticed.

Queue Stray Tray, the reusable drink tray designed for every drink-juggling scenario where keys + phone + cups are not quite working out.

Inspired by the morning coffee run ritual, branding and packaging design for Stay Tray centres around a colour palette of warm sunrise coral pink and urban jungle-leaning concrete greys, with an over-sized camo pattern used for supporting brand and shipping collateral.

Global waste is expected to grow to over 3.4 billion tonnes by 2050.

The stats are confronting. And our caffeinated lifestyle choices are only adding to an already unsustainable amount of waste making its way to landfill each year. While those cardboard trays you grab when going on a coffee run are meant to be disposable, they use an energy and resource-reliant recycling process. That’s if they make it into the recycling.

Australia, like every country in the world, has a massive waste problem. In fact, a shocking 76 million tonnes of waste goes into Australian landfill each year. It’s time to reassess how we consume and contribute to the cycle of waste.
